I designed this modified Japanese tanto to bring the strength and feel of a full-tang blade while paying homage to some of the classic Japanese tanto features such as the habaki and ito wrap. From the side, it closely resembles a hidden-tang or frame-tang knife, however it is one seamless piece with permanently affixed handle scales.
The oak handle scales were engraved with diamonds to resemble the repeating diamonds of a traditional Ito wrap, and to provide an extremely secure grip. The scales have been burnt and treated to protect from the elements and to give a more organic and textured look/feel. The blasted and antiqued brass liners are carefully sculpted to protrude from the handle scales and appear as a habaki.
Length: 4.5” blade, 9.125” overall
Steel: Hand-sanded satin 52100 steel @61.5 HRC
Handle materials: Burnt, treated, engraved red oak, antiqued brass liners, brass pins
